This was the second year I got to work on my alma mater’s annual student fashion show, Runway. This year was even more rewarding as Block Club hosted two Buffalo State Communication Design students, Cody and Laura, who came to the office and worked with us to design a poster, the event program and a lookbook showcasing the fashion students’ collections.

They did an awesome job developing a concept for this year’s theme, City Bits / City Bytes, using deconstructed concentric circles in bold colors in contrast to the stark white, statuesque photos Luke Copping shot for us of two dresses from last year’s Cotton Inc. challenge. Great work guys!

Yatzer founder and editor in chief, Costas Voyatzis, was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to tour the Hermès workshop in Pantin, France last month.

The one thing he learned not to do when visiting the workshop is to leave your bag on the floor.

“Once you’ve taken the tour through their Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré boutique, you’ll realize that treating your leather with the respect it deserves is like paying tribute to the craftsman who made it,” Voyatzis says.

From the sights to the sounds to the scents, a visit to the Hermès workshop is a very sensory experience.

“As for the workshop itself, the prevalent sentiment is that of everlasting love: each bag is affectionately crafted by a single artisan from start to finish, which would explain why they only turn out two pieces a week,” Voyatzis says. “No leather-worker is allowed to intervene in another colleague’s bag and each individual has their own set of tools, which they eventually take home with them when they retire.”

Many Hermès artisans claim they can pick a piece they created out of a lineup without question. That is some serious craftsmanship.

If this is the process that goes into making a handbag, I’d love to see how Hermès saddles are created. Sheesh.

LAW (“Lives and Works”) is a bi-annual magazine hailing from Brighton, UK. A ”portrayal of the beautiful everyday,” LAW sees style everywhere.

Our preliminary concern is documenting the overlooked and giving people a sense of belonging and recognition that perhaps they wouldn’t normally receive but in no way, shape, or form less deserve. Style tribes who may not be at the forefront of fashion but have a very particular aesthetic in their own right.

We are interested in making fashion accessible by challenging perceptions that it’s an elitist world and showing that it surrounds us all. We hope to appeal to butchers and builders, everyday boys who wouldn’t mind reading a fashion magazine, if only they could appreciate and relate to the content.

I’m very excited about this drop.

Founded by Hamilton Carhartt in Detroit in 1889, Carhartt is dedicated to providing apparel tailored to meet the highest standards of quality, durability and comfort.

In 1994, Carhartt Work In Progress was established as a distribution network for Carhartt across Europe. There, it introduced a selection of items from the original work wear range into a new market.

A few years later, in 1997, the first product line designed exclusively by Carhartt WIP for Europe hit the shelves. Since then, WIP has carefully and lovingly adapted, re-interpreted and re-fitted traditional work wear cuts to meet the demands of an active life in an urban environment.

Now, in 2012, this Fall/Winter line is about to drop.

Photographer Ari Versluis and profiler Ellie Uyttenbroek have collaborated to catalogue the dress of various social groups, spending sixteen years in their effort to systematically document numerous social identities in modern culture. From it was born Exactitudes:

They call their series Exactitudes: a contraction of exact and attitude. By registering their subjects in an identical framework, with similar poses and a strictly observed dress code, Versluis and Uyttenbroek provide an almost scientific, anthropological record of people’s attempts to distinguish themselves from others by assuming a group identity. The apparent contradiction between individuality and uniformity is, however, taken to such extremes in their arresting objective-looking photographic viewpoint and stylistic analysis that the artistic aspect clearly dominates the purely documentary element.

Awesome. Which Exactitude are you? If I had to choose, I guess I’d say I’m a Bikini Babe fast-tracking it to the Early Bird carpool lane? Or to be more specific - the Early Bird Bikini Babe combo, which is the outfit that happens when I’m wearing a bikini in public and someone - usually screaming - throws a sandy blanket over my head. Mr. Trebek, Early Bird Bikini Babe for 500!
